In the IICM conference in Nashville, I had pointed out a project named Joost - formerly known as “The Venice Project”, which used an innovative p2p technology to distribute video, the same technology that was used by file sharing softwares like Kazaa.
Joost is still in Beta and is not available for public view yet. However the team has been distributing a couple of invitations to blogger, and I received one yesterday. I would say I’m blown away by the ease and clarity of Joost.
Friends, here we bring to you the exclusive peak preview of Joost - just for you from Gale S Denley Student Media Center, University of Mississippi. Hold your breath because you will kill to get an invitation for Joost after watching the preview.
Open the link below, click play button and sit back and watch.

I got an invitation to use Joost a few days ago as well. Unfortunately, I was far from impressed. The interface is nice, but the quality was poor and it was jittery. I’m at Vanderbilt and things usually download at 500kps+, so I’m not sure what the deal is. I guess its still in Beta and the quality all depends on the peer to peer network strength in your area.
So, I guess we’ll see. I’d say its not a TV-killer just yet

Hmmm.. Thats unusual. I tried it at two places, one in my University lab on a wired connection and other time in a Cafe Wireless in Oxford. At least half of the pictures that I posted were taken in Cafe’ and I got a pretty good quality. However, I think you maybe right. It should depend on number of p2p clients in the area, however I was wondering how many Joost users would be there in Oxford.
And as in Beta, the number of their channels is limited yet, however they plan a lot of expansion in terms of services. One thing is for sure though, if not a killer yet , its still gonna give a hard time to TV stations.

I don’t think present users can send invitations. Its being provided by the Joost team, as first come first serve queue. I would recommend you to sign up.
Either way, its not gonna be long now before they make it public.
